After finishing school in 2004, I became an apprentice parts advisor for a local Audi dealership. I worked for the company for over seventeen years. When I didn’t get a management role that I applied for, I decided that my time in the motor trade had run its course and I was ready to start looking for a new career.
Moving to Wales
Thankfully the opportunity came up for my husband and I to follow our dreams and move to Wales. We have family less than a mile away from Elidyr Communities Trust in Rhandirmwyn, it felt like destiny to explore this as a potential new adventure.
After being in permanent employment solidly for over twenty-one years, I was determined to move to Wales with a plan of action in place. I saw an advert on Facebook for Support Workers.
Care work has always been something my mum told me I would be good at and I wanted to see if she was right, so I called Elidyr and applied for a job.
A taster day to experience life at Elidyr Communities Trust
I’d never worked in this kind of field before, so Lisa suggested I come along for a volunteer day to see if the job was right for me.
Without sounding corny, after finishing a thirteen-hour volunteer shift, I felt like I had won the lottery! Every single aspect of the job role was what I had been longing for all those years I spent in the motor trade, the feeling of satisfaction at the end of the day was so empowering.
I knew this was the career path for me.
Life as a Support Worker
The application process and interview thankfully were successful, and I began my new career as a Support Worker.
After nine months, each day still feels as fresh as the day I started, only with the expanding knowledge I have learnt from the excellent levels of training given to staff, but most importantly from the residents and students I support.
The training courses I have attended have been extremely useful to gain knowledge and experience for my job role. However, for me the residents and students here are the heart and soul of development within this career. I can honestly say that there isn't a day where I don’t learn something new.
Elidyr Communities Trust is truly a remarkable place for residents and learners to expand their life skills and grow as a person but the same can be said for the staff who work here.
A message to anyone considering a career in care
This has been a wonderful opportunity to grow as a person and develop new skills. Working here has by far given me the most life changing nine months of my life and I am looking forward to many more years to come.
It is an absolute pleasure to come to work each day and see the smiles on everyone’s face, I have finally found a career that allows me to give something back whilst at the same time I am gaining so much.
