For ten years, all Joshua had really known was waiting tables and pouring pints. Was he happy? Not really, so when life took an unexpected turn and Joshua left London for rural Wales, he knew it was time to make a change.
A change of direction
Joshua was skeptical when his mother showed him the advert she’d seen in a local community magazine for an admin job.
“I could make a mean mojito and recite licensing law from memory but meetings and spreadsheets? I didn’t have any experience working in admin. That’s for people that spend their day at a desk, not running a busy bar or hauling around kegs.”
Deciding to give it a try, Joshua applied for and secured a job as an Office Assistant at Elidyr Communities Trust.
Life at Elidyr Communities Trust
Expecting to spend days staring at a screen, Joshua found himself doing something altogether unexpected. He wasn’t stuck to his desk, every day he was walking across the site, visiting all the houses and work areas to attend the meetings that he wrote the minutes for.
When he was asked to start working on Elidyr’s GDPR compliance, he found himself immersed in laws and regulations that he found strangely fascinating, which spurred him to learn as much as he could.
Joshua remembers the moment when it all clicked for him.
“I was in an annual review meeting for one of our residents, taking notes as her house manager gave a presentation on all the things she’d been doing over the past year. I looked up as I finished a sentence, and there was a picture of the resident grinning from ear to ear. That was the moment that it all came together for me. From that moment, my mind was made up. I’d found my place, where I felt I belonged, and I knew that this was an organisation that I could spend my life working for.”
If you are thinking of applying to Elidyr
Joshua didn’t have any admin experience, but it didn’t matter. He now has a folder on his desk containing all 137 pages of the GDPR text, dog-eared and highlighted. He's recently been promoted to Office Coordinator.
His message to anyone that’s considering applying for a role at Elidyr Communities is simple,
“Leave your expectations at the door. I came into this job not knowing what to expect, but what I found was a caring, person-centered community that works just as hard to care for the wellbeing of its staff as it does its residents. Each and every one of us, no matter our role, is a part of something that is worthwhile and has real meaning. Every day, we’re making a real, positive difference to the lives of our residents, and I’ll take that over pulling pints any day.”
