Animals and food chains

Our learners have been examining owl pellets to understand what they have been eating.

Our budding scientists have been busy. As part of our life and world learning sessions we have been exploring different animals and food chains, with a recent focus on owls.

This week they got to put their learning into practice by dissecting owl pellets using our total communication resources. The learners were completely immersed in the activity, carefully following the steps, investigating what they found and discovering what the owls had been eating! Some owls proved to be much greedier than others!

Hands-on, experiential learning like this is invaluable and gives our learners the opportunity to learn through doing. Next term we are hoping to visit the British Bird of Prey Centre to see the owls up close.

And a little local plea … if anyone has a resident owl in their barn or farm buildings and would be happy for us to collect some pellets for our budding scientists to investigate, please get in touch with Val: valeriemorse@colegelidyr.ac.uk
