Last week we ran training for staff on a multitude of topics. Some are tailored towards new members of the team and others are continued professional development for existing staff. Being well trained is crucial to our approach.
Sessions on the Elidyr staff training programme
Induction to care
This gives new staff an insight into the care sector, what they can expect and how it looks at Elidyr Communities Trust. When people join our team as a Support Worker they may not have experience. This training session informs new team members about care policies and regulations across the sector. It also demonstrates our approach and how this might differ from other organisations.
People employed specifically as Support Workers will also do the All Wales Induction Framework (AWIF) and then enrol to do Level 2/3 Health & Social Care qualifications.
Managing with confidence
This learning and development training is part of a course being co-delivered by Jane Lews and a group of our senior staff. Jane is an expert coach mentor who has worked with us for many years. The course will be run across the year and is for Assistant Managers and new Senior Support Workers. The staff involved in delivering this training are doing it as part of their own professional development.
They are undertaking Level 4 qualification in Training & Development.
“You have a pretty fabulous team, with leadership skills by the dozen.”

The Autism Reality Experience
This is a regular favourite for training week. The Autism Reality Experience is a vehicle that comes to site and offers an innovative, immersive experience designed to give non-autistic people a feel for the sensory processing difficulties faced by people on the autism spectrum.
It’s not easy! Tasks presented require dexterity, amid flashing lights and loud noise whilst wearing heavy gloves and glasses that reduce vision. Will people manage to remember a key piece of information whilst experiencing this sensory overload?
“I thought the experience was an amazing eye opener, it really is quite tricky!”
Positive behaviour support (PBS) training
PBS improves quality of life through understanding the reasons why an individual may use certain behaviour to communicate in order to get their needs met. Once we understand we can build better support, enable positive outcomes and improve the services that individuals receive.
Introduction to the All Wales Induction Framework (AWIF)
All new staff in Wales working in the care sector must undertake this course, it covers care and support for adults, and children and young people. It provides a structure for a common induction in health and social care across Wales and outlines the knowledge and skills new workers need to gain in the first six months of employment.
“Staff recognise issues immediately because they are well trained and have taken the time to really get to know my son. This is a Godsend because he has had a lot of heart and lung problems – he is very prone to pneumonia. The last time he had a severe bout he was in hospital for two weeks. Staff picked it up extremely quickly - it's this sort of attention that matters.”

Epilepsy training
Guidelines for certain conditions might change and it’s important to keep up to date with the latest theory and guidance to support people with epilepsy. This session covered how to give rescue medications that are administered into the buccal cavity in the cheek to bypass the digestive system for rapid absorption.
