Martyn's musical story

3 images of a young man playing instruments. A violin, triangle and drum. A fourth image of a young man in a crowd watching a gig. He is smiling

When Martyn’s parents first visited Elidyr Communities Trust, it was an emotional time because they wanted to find somewhere secure and comfortable for Martyn to live and learn. They said,

"You think that family are going to be there to look after them but suddenly it dawned on us that life can change at the drop of a hat."

Most other places the family visited were very focused on the academic side and Martyn’s parents felt that the community set up at Elidyr was vitally important. Martyn can leave his house and go down to the garden by himself. His parents say that he strides around like a man on a mission instead of shuffling around! They feel confident Martyn has a happy, fulfilling life with lots of activity. If you walk with him around Llandovery people come over for a chat.

The balance of independence and support has meant Martyn has flourished at Elidyr, and he is doing things that his parents never imagined he would.

Martyn loves music. He doesn’t easily communicate, and music really does something for him. This is why Martyn is ‘the face’ of our 2025 festive appeal. Martyn’s dad said,

“Martyn feels about live music the way some people feel about football – he goes from his usual passive, laisse-faire default to alert, engaged and smiling so much the top of his head might fall off! Martyn likes all music, but live music – listening or playing – is most definitely his happy place.

We know that music is great therapy for our learners and residents, that’s why we’ve put music at the heart of our festive appeal. If you can see the benefit of music as a tool of joy and communication for Martyn and our other residents and learners, please donate today.

Your support means people like Martyn can access the best possible musical experiences as part of their daily lives.
